Throughout the year, Uzume Taiko holds public workshops for people of varying ages and levels of skill. These are designed to teach students about the Japanese taiko drum through active participation in taiko drumming form, basic Japanese rhythms, verbal notation, sticking technique and group playing. Classes will focus on exercising the body, mind and spirit while training in a variety of drumming styles, movements and techniques.

TAIKO WORKSHOPS
Learn about the Japanese taiko through active participation in taiko drumming! Classes will cover the many aspects that make taiko so compelling to see and fun to play, including sounds and rhythms, whole-body choreography, and the feeling of playing within a group. We will look at the different contexts in which taiko can be heard, from its traditional uses in ancient Japan to its rapid rise in popularity around the world as a modern and evolving art form. Students will learn about warming up the body, proper stance, grip, vocal patterns, simple sticking exercises, taiko terms, movement and choreography, and a practice piece that combines these skills. To register or for more information about any of the workshops, please contact Kirstie McCallum at signup@uzume.com or telephone 604.873.6373 extension 115.
